With the multilateral gathering just over a month away, it has become clear that Beijing’s courtship of the European Union has failed.

In a speech at the Atlantic Council in Washington last Thursday, EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström said the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) “need to be updated to face 21st-century realities. In particular, unfair trading practices from China, like forced technology transfer and state subsidies.”
